For the third time in five years, Cedar Rapids will host a Jesus Seminar on the road, a program that brings noted Biblical Scholars into local communities to explore some of the most recent findings in Biblical scholarship.
This seminar will feature two professors from Union Theological Seminary in New York: Dr. Hal Tussig and Dr. Celene Lillie. Their focus will be to explore some of the extra-biblical materials such as The Gospel of Mary and the Odes of Solomon as they relate to early Christian spirituality.
Dr. Tussig is the author of A New New Testament, a book that combines what we know as the New Testament and ten of the books from that period that didn’t make it into the New Testament but add significantly to our understanding of the formation of early Christianity. Dr. Lillie was the Director of Translations for that book.
This event, held in the Community Room of the PCI Pavilion, and co-sponsored by Prairiewoods, will look at spirituality in the formation of early Christianity and will be a combination of lectures and examples of spiritual practice.
The sessions begin at 7:00p.m. Friday, Oct. 7; and will continue on Saturday beginning at 9:30a.m. and continuing until 3:30p.m The discounted registration fee is $60 if registered by Sept. 23, or per-session fees. More information is available in the church office, 319-393-2400.
