September Is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Suicide touches many lives in our community. According to 2017 data from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), suicide is the 9th leading cause of death overall in Iowa. On average, one person dies by suicide every 20 hours in Iowa. It is believed that suicide is preventable and help is available.  If someone with thoughts of suicide is able to get through their suicidal crisis with supports, they will likely stay alive. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline is: 1-800-273-8255.

Members of the Linn County Suicide Prevention Coalition offer a wide range of services to support both those who have lost someone to suicide and those with active suicidal thoughts including a 24-hour crisis hotline, chat and text support, in-person immediate crisis response, and support groups for youth and adult suicide loss survivors.
